Interactive maps of buildings from The Chicago School of Architecture

These maps show Chicago buildings from Carl Condit’s Chicago School of Architecture, Thomas Leslie’s Chicago Skyscrapers, and Condit’s Chicago 1910-29. The maps can be filtered to select buildings still standing, or demolished, or by construction or demolition date. The leaflet maps also include dates for all downtown buildings, based on a database from the City of Chicago.

The first map includes all buildings mentioned in Condit’s book, and includes more options for filtering. The map defaults to all buildings, standing or demolished, but either group can be filtered out. In addition, ranges for year of construction and year of demolition are included. The size of the points indicates how much text Condit devoted in his book to the building. Clicking on a building provides more information. This map as Google Map as a background.

The second map also includes all buildings mentioned in Condit’s book, but can only be filtered by construction decade (with the top-right filter option). It includes as background, however, all buildings of the city center, shown as faint blue circles. Clicking any of the circles provides details on all buildings, though less for those blue circles (those not appearing in Condit’s book). This map has Leaflet Map as a background.

The third map includes buildings mentioned in Leslie’s book, plus a background of all other buildings, on Leaflet, just as in the second map. Some of the demolished buildings from Leslie’s book are missing, however, as I have not yet captured their coordinates.

Most recently (June 2020), I added maps showing most of the 260 Chicago-area buildings in Condit’s 1973 book Chicago 1910-29. As for the first book, there are two maps, the first with more search options and the second with a background of all the buildings.
